In this week’s “Top Sighting Photo,” a large bull elk makes it way toward the road in Gibbon Meadows. Groups of bull elk often spend the entirety of the summer within the reaches of Gibbon Meadows, which makes it a fantastic spot for wildlife watchers. Scopes or binoculars are often needed, however, as the meadow stretches a great distance westward and away from the road.
There were actually two bulls at this sighting, but this photo couldn’t be ignored. As we approach the time where antlers quit growing, and velvet begins to shed, seeing a bull this size still in velvet is something you can only do for a few weeks each year.
